The history...

As the original and longest running Beatles sightseeing tour, there’s a bit of a story to tell about how and when the experience began, and how it has become what it is today.

Liverpool’s original Beatles sightseeing coach tour. Established in 1983 by Cavern City Tours, the owners of the world‑famous Cavern Club, it has played a pioneering role in shaping the Beatles tourism industry.

Origins…

Born from a passion for both The Beatles and Liverpool’s rich music and cultural heritage, the Magical Mystery Tour has spent more than 40 years delivering a premium touring experience to Beatles fans, music lovers, and culturally curious visitors from around the world.

The original tour operated on vintage Bedford VAL buses, painted in the same colourful psychedelic livery made famous by the Beatles’ film Magical Mystery Tour. Cavern City Tours once owned the original film bus itself, now long retired and proudly displayed as a centrepiece outside the Hard Rock Cafe in Florida.

Strength to strength…

Over the decades, the Magical Mystery Tour has welcomed more than 2.5 million passengers. Our knowledgeable guides and drivers have shared laughter, memories, and moments of genuine emotion with visitors from every corner of the globe, immersing them in Liverpool’s extraordinary Beatles story.

In April 2026 The Magical Mystery Tour was once again recognised by Tripadvisor as one of the very best travel experiences in the world, earning a place in the Travelers’ Choice® Best of the Best Things To Do Awards 2026.

This year’s results see the Magical Mystery Tour ranked:

  • #1 Top Experience in the UK
  • #4 in Europe
  • #5 worldwide

An extraordinary achievement that places Liverpool’s most iconic Beatles tour alongside global landmarks such as Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail, Edinburgh Castle, and some of the world’s most celebrated cultural experiences.

In 2024, the Magical Mystery Tour was awarded Tripadvisor’s “Best of the Best”, ranking Number 1 in the UK and Number 8 globally in the Cultural & Heritage category. These are accolades we are immensely proud of and one that inspires us to continue delivering a truly special experience for every guest.

The tour today…

As visitor expectations have evolved over the years, so too has the tour. While today’s vehicles offer modern comforts such as air conditioning and improved accessibility and safety, the experience on board remains just as colourful, fun, and magical as ever.

From being the first—and once the only—Beatles sightseeing tour in Liverpool during the 1980s, when the city was a very different place to visit, the Magical Mystery Tour now stands at the forefront of bus tours within a tourism economy worth £6.25bn to the city of Liverpool.

And the beat goes on…
